The Flame That Guides Us Home + Not I by Demon Hunter are the first two opening songs from Demon Hunter’s titanic third full-length album, 2005′s The Triptych.
Carrying on with the double-attack theme are the first two opening songs from 2005′s epic third Demon Hunter album, “The Triptych”. Fans and metalheads alike thought it would be impossible to top 2004′s Summer of Darkness, Demon Hunter’s sophomore album, but the first two tracks from Triptych quickly dispelled that notion and shoved a dagger straight through the heart of anyone who questioned Demon Hunter’s pedigree or ability to top the untoppable. “The Flame That Guides Us Home” is an opening interlude (prologue, if you will) that sets the stage, beautifully, with angelic singing vocals, that leads into the face crushing “Not I”; a powerful non-conformist warcry for those living a life for Christ that brutally dispels any notion that Christians will simply follow in the footsteps of the world. “Not I”. It’s a beautiful and poetic piece of metal mastery that sets the stage for arguably Demon Hunter’s greatest album ever. (Absolutely their best album in my humble opinion).
The Flame That Guides Us Home Lyrics:
Sing now seraph, find the calm within your soul
Bring us closer to the flame that guides us home
Not I Lyrics
So now you’re suffering the fallacy of what you said
When you uncover the depression from where you’ve tread
Breathe over the glass you wrote on
Swallow all that you waste your throat on
You wear the mark and wave the banner they made with sin
Revealing every single lie that you’ve been breeding within
Wash over the skin you’ve broken
Think over the tone you spoke in
So lost in your affliction
The solemn comfort of your grave
If you close your eyes the light can’t take it away
Not I – I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I – I won’t surrender what I am
Not I – And even if it was a part of me
Not I – I’ll never be that way again
The blind will follow on the path that you created in vain
No guiding light, but just the shadow of the dead will remain
Dig open the pain you’re hiding
Give your hand to the faith you’re fighting
The void you suffer is a curse forever bleeding inside
Now you embrace the fatal sickness you should despise
Remember the day you lost that
Where is the shame that will bring your soul back?
So lost in your addiction
The solemn comfort of your grave
If you close your eyes the light can’t take it away
Not I – I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I – I won’t surrender what I am
Not I – And even if it was a part of me
Not I – I’ll never be that way again
Reach back behind your pride
And pull the thorn from the burning pain in your side
Sing me a new song
A broken song of redemption and regret
Sing me a new song
And beg for all the mercy you can get
Not I – I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I – I won’t surrender what I am
Not I – And even if it was a part of me
Not I – I’ll never be that way again
About Demon Hunter Month
January 2013 is dedicated to the Christian metal band Demon Hunter, arguably my favorite band; and will feature songs from their entire catalog featured daily throughout the month, one a day. Whether you like metal, believe in God or not, check these songs out as you may be pleasantly surprised and hopefully you will discover some new-to-your-ears music to enjoy. Demon Hunter’s sound is extremely diverse, not all songs feature screams and growls, some are slow, sung ballads; others are heartfelt, all are deep with powerful lyrics that will make you think and ponder, as the sound takes you away.
